Diary 2010

This is the 2010 diary for Winterbourn Down Border Morris. The status shows whether a commitment has been made to dance at the event. The comments are for any snippets about or after the event. Further information will be added as it becomes available.

We practise most Mondays; for details click here. But in the summer we alternate practices in the village hall with practices at local pubs - a schedule is posted click here below. Regular practices in All Saints Church Hall start again some time in September.

Friday, 1st January

Priston's famous New Year's Day Celebrations propel us into 2010, starting at noon.

Confirmed

A very cold day, plenty of residual ice on the side-roads which gave a nail-biting ride down from Marksbury. But the sun was shining and we danced in the company of the gallant Priston Jubilee and others outside “Ring o'Bells” until fingers and toes dropped off.

Saturday, 1st May

Brandon Hill, Bristol 4.45am

Confirmed

One of the best May mornings yet encountered. In the company of Rag Morris, Ashley's Rise, Pigsty Morris, Nonesuch Morris and guests from the North, we danced without interruption, dovetailing and sashying until we had produced a glorious, sunny dawn. This was followed by a wonderful breakfast at The Bristolian in Picton Street.

Sunday, 2nd May

Upton-on-Severn Folk Festival

Confirmed

Our fears of attending the Festival on a Sunday were unfounded – it even seemed like a Saturday! The weather was freezing cold, however, and called for an outbreak of scarves and gloves. Lots of dancing followed and admiring glances exchanged with other sides, plus a kiss from a Bunny From Hell. Who could wish for more?

Monday, 3rd May

Winterbourne Down Carnival

Confirmed

I'm delighted to report that the 'MISTAKE' practices paid off in time for our performance of Hugh's Mistake- we achieved a magnificent shambles, thanks to our clever choreographers whose planning was faultless. The other dances went off as well as they usually do and our ever-adoring crowd carried tales of our exploits home with them.

Saturday,26th June

Ragged & Old Day of Dance

Confirmed

A very enjoyable day and also a very hot one! We started out at the Scout Hut, joining our hosts Ragged & Old and their Clog dancers plus Rag Morris. Our tour took us to “The Ram” and “The Lamb” where we exposed the locals to our unique skills. After a splendid lunch, provided by our hosts, we arrived at our final pub, “The King's Head” at France Lynch where we danced some more. We were small in number, therefore a limited repertoire was on offer. I must say I was glad not to be dancing – the sun poured out of a cloudless sky with ne'er a breeze. Finally arriving back at the Scout Hut at about 5pm, we enjoyed tea & cakes. We had a splendid time despite the heat. THANKS Ragged & Old!

Saturday, 17th July

Frenchay Flower Show

Confirmed

The troops report that this was a very successful sunny day, with a large appreciative audience. Cedric, our drum porter for the day, wheeled the drum all the way to Frenchay from his house – phew! Another team member collected prizes for her fantastic vegetables and all the while we wowed the eager crowds with our dancing expertise. Did you know that there exists an eatable treat called a Fireman? One of our dancers pronounced them “YUMMY”. Get yours next year at Frenchay Flower Show.........

10th May

Swan

Tytherington GL12 8QB

Well, it was freezing cold – a two-vest night - I remember that much and, because there wasn't a big turn-out, we treated it as a practice session. Much praise for the beer and excellent cider, we enjoyed ourselves in our usual inimitable fashion.

17th May

Bird in Hand

with Priston Jubilee Morris

Saltford BS31 3EJ

We were joined by our pals from Priston Jubilee Morris Men and had a pleasant, albeit nippy evening, dancing turn about and drinking until it got too dark to see anything. One of our number had some missing property returned to him which brought a happy smile to his face.

7th June

Anchor

Oldbury on Severn

S35 1QA

The rain was such that we abandoned our usual happy outing to this pub and, instead, repaired to our local “Globe” where we held a successful practice evening while enjoying plenty of ale and being under cover.

14th June

Old Royal Ship

Luckington SN14 6PA

A lovely pub with a great range of ales and ciders, we were spoiled for choice. It was a cold evening and we were small in numbers, dance-wise, but swished our way through a goodly selection of our considerable repertoire. Excellent music with guest appearances!

28th June

Anchor Inn

Thornbury BS35 1JY

We spent a pleasant, summery evening here, strutting our stuff and quaffing refreshing pints of cool drinks. Apart from a few unscheduled changes to “Speed the Plough”, everything went according to plan.

5th July

Lamb 7.30

Iron Acton BS37 9UZ

It was Quiz Night here, starting at 9pm, so we entertained an avid crowd of enthusiasts who were awaiting the start of the Quiz. A lovely evening and a grand turnout, we did plenty of dancing and enjoyed lots of refreshment. Thank you, Landlord, for your generous donation – we'll be back!

19th July

Codrington Arms

with Pigsty Morris

Yate BS37 7LG

Joined this summery evening by our friends “Pigsty Morris”, we enjoyed a very happy time at another of our favourite pubs, dancing turn about until we had completed a joint “Upton Stick”, “Dilwyn” and “Bonny Green Garters”. After that, it was too dark to shake our sticks at anyone so we carefully wended our way home, making sure that all the pub's hens had been returned to the garden.

26th July

Fox

with Rag Morris

Old Down BS32 4PR

This was our final pub danceout for 2010, strutting our stuff with pals “Rag Morris” from Bristol. We had a huge audience who were enjoying platefuls and glassfuls of tasty food and drink at this very pretty hostelry. They really didn't need anything else to cap their pleasure, did they? But they hadn't reckoned on a fantastic dancing display and a belt of Morris-type humour....which they got in ample doses. Our thanks to the Landlord and patrons for their kind donations – we'll will return!
